Kitacon is a not-for-profit convention focused on Japanese media and geek culture, such as anime, cosplay and video games.
The convention gained its start in 2009 as a residential event, taking place at the New Park Inn in Northampton. For the first two years of its lifespan, Kitacon welcomed anime and pop culture fans to take part in classic convention staples such as the Cosplay Masquerade and Kita's Got Talent, as well as introducing more creative events such as Build-A-Mecha.
As the convention grew in popularity, it outgrew the New Park Inn and had to move venues — thus, in 2011, Kitacon's new home became the Hilton Metropole at the Birmingham NEC. With a bigger venue and more attendees, the convention thrived with impressive staging and exciting panels, the continuation of its hallmark events, and the start of the "legendary" nightly parties.
In 2017, the convention once again proved to be too big for a hotel setting; it moved once again, this time to the University of Warwick's sprawling campus, where the on-site facilities and Arts Centre proved to be the perfect place to settle down.
Over the years, Kitacon has welcomed many guests through its doors; voice actors, cosplayers and musicians alike. Some of the famous faces fans have been able to meet throughout the convention's life include voice actors Chris Patton, Ellen McLain and Matt Mercer, cosplayers Volpin Props and Kizuki Cosplay, and musical acts such as Lamia Cross and HITT.
